Jason had a spelling session with Katlyn at the Growing Kids Therapy Center (GKTC). This was the second session learning about the parts and structure of a song in preparation for his writing of the lyrics for a song.
Katlyn asked, “What do you think the difference is between a topic and a theme?” Jason spelled, “I think a topic is much more specific and pointed idea, whereas a theme can be more generalized or based on a feeling or perception that underlies a topic.” Katlyn said, "I could not have said it better myself!"
During one of the questions from the session topic, Katlyn asked, “Using various senses, how could you write a sentence for its cold outside?” Jason spelled, “My jacket shifted in the wind as my skin raised with goose bumps.”
After finishing up the lesson on the structure of a song and how to write lyrics, Katlyn asked if Jason wanted to start writing his song? Jason spelled, “Let’s go for it.”
She then asked Jason if he wanted to give her any hints on what he was going to write about or would it be a surprise? Jason spelled, “Surprise.”
Jason spelled and wrote his first song;
Title: Love You
Verse One
Sitting at the table,
Dreaming of all I’ll be able,
Practicing to share myself,
My words won't be shelved.
Verse Two
Ask me and I’ll tell,
My body isn’t an empty shell,
Words swirl flowing out,
Life won't let me shout.
Chorus
Share the love,
Give it freely,
Let’s rise above,
All care deeply.
Verse Three
I found my people here,
Acceptance oh so clear,
Finally I’m loving life,
Freedom from this world’s strive.
Chorus
Share the love,
Give it freely,
Let’s rise above,
All care deeply.
Verse Four
Keeping love and empathy here,
My goal in life is clear,
Sharing my story aloud,
So of humanity I’ll be proud.
Bridge
Kindness, empathy, accepting and true,
My promise is to let you be you.
Chorus
Share the love,
Give it freely,
Let’s rise above,
All care deeply.
Outro
Be you, always you.
Keeping love and empathy here,
Let’s rise above,
All care deeply.
Outro:
Be you, always you.
Chorus
Giving love,
Give it freely,
Let’s rise above,
All care deeply.
Outro
Be you, always you.
Give it freely,
always you.
Chorus
Giving love,
Give it freely,
Let’s rise above,
All care deeply.
Outro
Be you, always you.
Katlyn then said, “So, with the AI thing, I can either send that to your parents and you guys can play around with it at home, or we can figure it out together, here, cause then you can also give notes and changes that you might want to make. I’ll leave that up to you, but if you can, I want to get a title from you and any musical direction – so the type of style that you are looking for, cause you want to give the AI program some direction of what you are thinking. It’s not going to be probably perfectly, like what you might be playing in your head, cause we are not. You can give me all the notes and things and write it out, but you can at least get the idea and the feeling of what you are thinking for this. So, first give me a title for this.” Jason spelled, “Love You.”
Katlyn asked, “What is your idea for style?” Jason spelled, “Ballad and thematic pop.”
For the question of a male or female voice, Jason spelled, “A male voice.”
Jason also spelled, “Let’s do the AI program here together."
During the next spelling session with Katlyn, Jason worked with her to put his lyrics and song to music! She used an online program/app called Suno. During the check in at the beginnning of the session, Jason spelled, “I’m excited. Let’s start.”
When asked if he had any additional direction to add to the music program, he spelled, “Hopeful and happy,” so Katlyn inputted this, as well, resulting in “Ballad, thymic pop, hopeful and happy, and male voice.”
In setting up the song structure order, Jason spelled, “Verse one and two, chorus, verse three, chorus, verse four, bridge and chorus, then outro.”
The program developed two different versions of the accompaniment for the music to the song. After listening to both versions, Katlyn asked Jason if he had any thoughts on what he heard? Jason spelled, “I absolutely love the first one.”
After completing the song with the program, Katlyn asked Jason if he had any additional thoughts. He spelled, “This is seriously a highlight moment in my life. I could never have imagined I’d be able to do this in a million years. Thank you.”
Katlyn mentioned that the International Association for Spelling as Communication (I-ASC) holds a monthly virtual event called the Neurolyrical Café to showcase the music, poetry and art of the non-speaking community. Tonight was October’s event and perhaps Katlyn would be able to quickly get Jason’s song in the set list. In response, Jason spelled, “That would be incredible to be able to participate in that. Can you sweet talk I-ASC for tonight? If they can’t then that’s fine. I want to write a song for it every month.”
A big thanks to Katie from I-ASC for featuring Jason’s first song as the lead on the set list in the virtual Neurolyrical Café on 25 October 2024. It was very well received by everyone and especially the very proud parents!

Jason had a spelling session with Katlyn at the Growing Kids Therapy Center (GKTC). Katlyn asked him what he wanted to do and Jason spelled, “Write (another song) for Neurolyrical Café.” Jason added, “Dreams of the world is the theme.”
Jason spelled the lyrics in one take and in the next session he worked with Katlyn to put them to music with the online Suno App music program.
During the check in, Jason spelled, “I am excited for this.”
For the order of the song and structure, Jason spelled, “Verse one and two, chorus, verse three, chorus, bridge, verse four, chorus.”
For additional guidance to the Suno music program, Jason spelled, “Male; the genre will be grunge pop; and excited, hopeful, easy listening, and worldly.”
The music program developed two versions of the song for Jason’s lyrics based on his parameters. Interestingly, both versions had a female singers.
After listening to the two versions of the song, Jason spelled, “Of the two, I really like the first one and it may be the winner but try putting in male singer.” Katlyn did and the third version featured a male singer.” After hearing the third version, Jason spelled, “I am going to go with the first female one.”
Here is Jason's second song that he spelled/wrote:
Title: Far Reaches
Verse One
How far can you see,
Past the horizon like me?
I dream of adventure,
A wish my dreams feature.
Verse Two
The cultures of old and new,
Representation in various hues,
Foods, religions and more,
A longing in my core.
Chorus
Traveling by plane, train or car,
The reaches of the World so far,
Every mountain I will climb,
Every place will be sublime.
Verse Three
People bring connection,
Kindness and love in directions,
To see the World’s gifts,
My spirit would lift.
Chorus
Traveling by plane, train or car,
The reaches of the World so far,
Every mountain I will climb,
Every place will be sublime.
Bridge
Look at that view,
I’ll see more than a few.
Verse Four
My chains I will break,
My freedom I will take,
I will see the world,
My limitations unfurled.
Chorus
Traveling by plane, train or car,
The reaches of the World so far,
Every mountain I will climb,
Every place will be sublime.
Katlyn asked Jason if he would like to write an into for the Neurolyrical Café and Jason spelled, “I have so many dreams about traveling the world, but my body gets in the way. I wrote this with the hope that those dreams will become a reality one day.”
The International Association for Spelling as Communication (I-ASC) featured Jason’s second song on the set list in the virtual Neurolyrical Café on 31 January 2025. Once again, It was very well received by everyone!

The theme for the group sessions vary every couple of months. This group session's topic was Conspiracy Conundrums.
The group of spellers included: Jason, Justin, Ben and Gage. Together, writing one verse each and then one line each of the chorus, the group spelled/wrote the following song.

Jason was so proud of his accomplishment that he spelled a note for his website and blog about it: "Hay my wonderful readers. I am very excited to share this song that I wrote. It was played at a concert full of songs written by other non-speakers like me. It is so powerful to not only share my thoughts but do it through a creative outlet like this."
Prior to this, on 15 November 2024, Katlyn mentioned to Jason the opportunity to write a song for the upcoming Boards & Chords virtual event, sponsored by the International Association for Spelling as Communication (I-ASC). Katlyn asked Jason what kind of song or theme did he want to write? Jason spelled, “I want to write about the true meaning of freedom.”
Katlyn asked him how he wanted it phrased in the application and Jason spelled, “There is a lot of discord in our country and the world right now. The idea of true freedom has been on my mind. It is applicable to more than politics. Understanding that can be challenging for some, so I’d like to bring attention to it.”
On 20 December, Jason had a spelling session with Katlyn at the Growing Kids Therapy Center (GKTC) and set out to write his song for the Boards & Chords. Jason spelled, “My goal with this song is to encourage everyone to consider the idea of true freedom. It’s so important to educate yourself to break the chains of bias.”
Jason spelled/wrote his fourth song:
Title: Freed to Freedom
Verse 1
Looking all around me
The invisible bindings I see
He told me I had to
I'd rather follow my own cue
Verse 2
Watching the news stories
Biased informational cronies
How can we decide on it
When they want us to forget
Chorus
We are freed but do we have freedom?
We get choices but do we have true choice?
What's your definition of freedom?
It's time to hear your voice
Freed to freedom
Verse 3
Our options are given
Choices are set it
Is freedom an illusion
I have reached that conclusion
Verse 4
They say we've been freed
But I believe we'll succeed
In choice for everyone
Autonomy and freedom will come
Chorus
We are freed but do we have freedom?
We get choices but do we have true choice?
What's your definition of freedom?
It's time to hear your voice
Freed to freedom
Verse 5
Lift your words high
Open your mind to the sky
Freedom from education
Unbiased complete information
Chorus
We are freed but do we have freedom?
We get choices but do we have true choice?
What's your definition of freedom?
It's time to hear your voice
Freed to freedom
Bridge
Be yourself and decide for you
Let your freedom ring true
Chorus
We are freed but do we have freedom?
We get choices but do we have true choice?
What's your definition of freedom?
It's time to hear your voice
Freed to freedom
For the order of the song, Jason spelled, "Verse one and two, chorus, verse three and four, chorus, verse five."
For the notes to the program on the style, Jason spelled, "Male voice, rock anthem, freedom."
The Suno App music program developed two versions of the song which Jason listened to. Afterwards, Jason spelled, "I like the clarity of the second one and it may be the one, but try adding electric guitar to the notes to see what we get."
The program generated a third and fourth version of Jason's song. Afterwards, Jason spelled, "That last one is the winner."
When asked how he wanted to develop the multimedia video presentation (which is required for the Boards & Chords), Jason spelled, "I wish I could be rocking out but it might be hard to get my body to do it. Do you think Group (Jason's spelling group session with his peers) would record us all rocking out together, with you and Kelly for the chorus?"
For additional ideas for the video, Jason spelled, "For verse one, image of hands breaking bindings. Verse two, maybe we can can Google bias news and information images for inspiration. Verse there, show a ballot to show set choices. And verse four need to think about it."
The next day, the spelling group - Ben, Jason, Gregory, and their CRPs Kelly and Katlyn - played Jason's song and video recorded them rocking out to it! Katlyn worked with Jason in next several one-on-one spelling sessions to edit and mix the video and pictures together with the song and lyrics.
The virtual Boards and Chords event was broadcasted live on the internet on 22 February 2025. For the intro to his song and the one thing that he would like the audience to take away, Jason spelled, "Inspiration to stay fully informed by unbiased sources. It's as close as we can get to true freedom."

Here is the song that they spelled together with Katlyn at the Growing Kids Therapy Center (GKTC).
Verse 1 (Jack)
There’s this feeling in the air
The space between you and me
Vibrations to heal and care
Sensations you can’t see
Verse 2 (Jason)
Energy magnetic or repellant
It’s a feeling we can’t shake
People give off energy expellant
True intentions they cannot fake
Chorus
(Jason) Always surrounded effected deeply
(Jack) Your choice to focus energy
(Jason) The beauty of a healing reaping
(Jack) Let the ringing bring vibrational synergy
Verse 3 (Jack)
Energizing as powers beyond
True intentions seep out
We feel where we belong
Universally vibrations shout
Chorus
(Jason) Always surrounded effected deeply
(Jack) Your choice to focus energy
(Jason) The beauty of a healing reaping
(Jack) Let the ringing bring vibrational synergy
Verse 4 (Jason)
There is power good and bad
Healing power in sound baths
Notes ring truly rad
Listen to calm the rath
Verse 5 (Jack)
Like music for the soul
In the air around
Calming energy the goal
Pulsing and lifting spirits abound
Chorus
(Jason) Always surrounded effected deeply
(Jack) Your choice to focus energy
(Jason) The beauty of a healing reaping
(Jack) Let the ringing bring vibrational synergy

During Jason's spelling session with Katlyn at the Growing Kids Therapy Center (GKTC), he wrote his sixth song for an upcoming Neurolyrical Café event sponsored by the International Association for Spelling as Communication (I-ASC).
Here is the song that Jason spelled:
Love Spring
As the petals open
Sprouts of green begin to grow
Beauty and peace begin
New life ready to show
Birth of a generation
Nature’s music sings aloud
Make room for regeneration
As Earth spins around
Spring is our reminder to bloom and grow
A time to let new seeds be sewn
Soak in the hug of the sun
Our chance for a new life has begun
Mother nature brings reprieve
Putting joy in sight
More love than you’d believe
She lets the colors be bright
Spring is our reminder to bloom and grow
A time to let new seeds be sewn
Soak in the hug of the sun
Our chance for a new life has begun
Hello spring my old friend
Let’s dance and sing love’s lend
As petals turn to leaves
It’s not goodbye but change
For flowers do not grieve
Life comes in range
Spring is our reminder to bloom and grow
A time to let new seeds be sewn
Soak in the hug of the sun
Our chance for a new life has begun
